Plastic Free July: How to Reduce Plastics Usage

Plastic Free July: How to Reduce Plastics Usage

Written by: Ardianto Putra

Plastic-Free July is a global movement that encourages us to reduce plastic pollution throughout the month of July. People worldwide pledge to cut down on plastic waste in their daily lives, whether by making small changes or completely eliminating plastic.

At SimplyGood, we're not just urging our customers to cut back on plastic; we're taking active steps to advocate for this change. We believe our customers can be the agents of change for a healthier, less plastic-reliant world.

The journey to a plastic-free life begins with our daily habits. Many of the everyday items we use contain plastic, often in ways we might not expect. Here are a few examples and tips on how to reduce plastic consumption with smarter choices:

  • Clothing
  • Did you know 60% of our clothes contain synthetic fibres like polyester, acrylic, or nylon – all forms of plastic?

How to avoid it: Choose clothing made from 100% natural fibres such as linen, cotton, or wool. When washing synthetic blends, opt for a cold, short cycle to minimise shedding.

  • Car Tyres
  • Modern car tyres are about 25% synthetic rubber, a petroleum-based plastic. As tyres wear down, they release microplastics into the environment, becoming a significant source of ocean pollution.

How to avoid it: Reduce car use whenever possible to minimise tyre wear and tear.

  • Self-care and Beauty Products
  • Many toiletries contain microplastics in the form of tiny particles added as exfoliants or glitter, and liquid plastics that thicken products and create smooth textures. Most of these products are also packaged in plastic.

How to avoid it: Check ingredient lists and avoid products with names starting with “poly-” or ending with “-lene”. Opt for toiletries in bar form or those with refillable or reusable packaging.

Hint: Try our refillable hand soap for a plastic-free alternative 😊

These are just three simple actions that can make a monumental impact on our environment. What other products can you avoid to reduce plastic consumption?
